Author Interview: Sam Fairburn

What inspired you to write your latest book?

Goddess of Perversion is book 1 in The Dark Goddesses Society series, and it will be released on May 22, 2025. Throughout history, the dark goddesses have been labeled as bad and twisted. This is because they are feminine energy and have “the audacity” to point out the hard truths. I wanted to give them a voice and a chance to rewrite their story on their own terms.

What is your favorite book/genre to read?

I love everything!!! If I had to choose, I would say dark romance/romantic suspense, thriller, and horror.

What themes do you find yourself returning to in your work?

I don’t have recurring themes, but I’m usually drawn to the darker parts of any theme. I like balance, which means I try to explore things from all points of view through the main characters and the side characters.

How do you handle writer’s block?

I mainly cry and drink coffee until I’m dehydrated. Then ideas tend to come back… Jokes aside, exhaustion is the enemy of creativity. I get writer’s block when I don’t take enough time to recharge. So, my way of managing writer’s block is to include time to relax in my schedule and hopefully avoid the hurdle altogether.

What do you hope readers take away from your stories?

I’ve been daydreaming and writing stories all my life. As a little girl, I was always searching for any hints of magic I could find in the real world. As I grew up, I found the magic and the harder parts of life. And so, my books endeavor to bring it all to life and create an experience that is whole—beautiful and magical, but also gut-wrenching at times. Even though my stories are fiction, I hope my readers feel seen and heard.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received as a writer?

To stop judging myself. It’s hard to write heartfelt stories that resonate with people if you censor yourself for fear of being rejected or laughed at. Because chances are, some of your readers may experience being rejected or laughed at for the exact things you want to write about, and they would benefit from having a piece of literature they feel at home reading. I know that for me, some books have been a lifeline through challenging periods of my life.

• If you could meet any character from your books, who would it be and why?

This question is hard! I would like to meet them all! But if I had to choose, it would be Finn from the Fate Cycle series. We have a lot in common, be it the love of books, interest in witchcraft, and never-ending curiosity. Also, he owns a bookstore, so… Need I say more?

Where can readers find your books? Where can they follow you online?

My books are currently available on Amazon, but I plan to expand to other online stores by the end of the year.

To keep up with me, you can subscribe to my newsletter through my website www.samfairburn.com
