Author Interview: Nomi Palmer

What inspired you to write your latest book?

My main inspiration for my entire series is NBC’s old soap opera Passions (which I named my series after). I am currently editing the 4th book, Endless Desire, inspired by fairy tales like Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid, but with a dark, more adult twist.

What is your favorite book/genre to read?

Paranormal romance! My favourite series is The Southern Vampire Mysteries (True Blood) by Charlaine Harris.

What themes do you find yourself returning to in your work?

Especially in Passions, a major theme is duality and mirrors. Dark vs Light, evil twins, storylines that show both sides of the same coin. This also often ties into theology and exploring humanity beyond the flesh, into morality and spirituality.

How do you handle writer’s block?

I struggle with this a lot. I find I have to put myself into the work, feeling like I’m fully immersed in the story. For Passions, I like to “go to” Tourmaline, the city in which the story takes place, by making Pinterest boards, curating playlists, or working on other aspects of the series (plotting future books, etc) that help transport me beyond the pages so I feel like I’m really there. Then the words start to flow.

What do you hope readers take away from your stories?

I want them to feel intensely, like the title of book one, Intense Feelings. I want them to connect viscerally with some aspect of the books and to have strong opinions about whom they love and whom they hate. And I want them to feel like they, too, can “go to” Tourmaline just by picking up the book and getting lost in it.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received as a writer?

WRITE THE BLURB FIRST. Before anything else! It’s when the idea is still a concept, and you only know it as a pitch, so it’s the perfect time to get the blurb done (which can always be tweaked later), and it also gives you an amazing jumping-off point for plotting the book itself.

• If you could meet any character from your books, who would it be and why?

I would meet Devlin Ainsworth, one of the MMCs from Intense Feelings, and I would give him a big hug. He definitely needs one! He suffers so much throughout the book, both in his history and in the present. He deserves every happy ending. And I’d love to meet him and tell him it’s all going to be okay.

Where can readers find your books? Where can they follow you online?

My books are currently available on Amazon, Kindle Unlimited, and at Makers in the Upper Canada Mall in Newmarket (until February 1st).
