Author Interview: Gabriel Hamilton

• What inspired you to write your latest book?

My Trip to Jamaica: The Land We Live was inspired by my families most recent trip to Jamaica where my daughter was able to experience more of the island while spending time with her cousins.  

• What is your favorite book/genre to read?

My favorite book genre is self-help, but I often read biographies and historical biographies as well. 

• What themes do you find yourself returning to in your work?

Most often, I’m turning what I aspire to hear or think is important as an adult into child-friendly literature. It started with affirmations, then moved on to life advice, and has found its way into inspirational travel. 

• How do you handle writer’s block?

I pull from real life. So when I can’t figure out what to write, I get out and experience life. 

• What do you hope readers take away from your stories?

I hope my writing is always 3 things: it’s intentional, inspirational, and impactful. Sure, the reader should be entertained, but they should also walk away a better person. 

• What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received as a writer?

Keep going. 

• If you could meet any character from your books, who would it be and why?

It would be one of the historical figures I have sprinkled throughout Invested in Me. One point of pride from my first book was to put historical figures in the book as supporting figures. So someone like Dr. King or Marcus Garvey would be someone I would just have a conversation with, learning how and why they thought like they thought from a firsthand perspective.
